Cambodian Fact: Cambodia’s only deep water seaport is Sihanoukville referred to locally as Kampong Som. This port was created by and named after King Nordom Sihanouk as the Sihanoukville Autonomous Port which opened in 1955.

Cambodian Fact – the name Phnom Penh means Penh’s Hill and is named for Wat Phnom. The legend has it that in 1372, a wealthy widow, Lady Penh, found a Koki (Candlenut) tree floating down the Tonle Sap River. Inside the tree, Lady Penh found four bronze statues of Buddha and a stone statue of Vishnu, an important Hindu God. Lady Penh used her position and ordered the villagers to raise the height of the hill northeast of her house and used the wood from the Koki tree to build a temple to house the four Buddhas and a shelter for Vishnu slightly lower on the hill. She then named the temple Wat Phnom Daun Penh (The Temple Estate on the Hill of Grandmother Penh), which later shortened to Wat Phnom.

Nearly 60 people attended a “Faith into The Community” breakfast at Immanuel over spring break. Not only was there an impressive number of people in attendance, the topic was impactful. Palatine Mayor Jim Schwantz and Immanuel missionary George Frahm, among others, spoke and attendees contributed to group discussions as well. Elder Kevin Kindelin shares the story of not only the breakfast, but also the implications for the future.

Cambodian Fact – Angkor Wat, a world heritage site, is the largest religious site in the world. It started out as a Hindu Temple built by Suryavarman II, an Indian ruler, in the first half of the 12th century. It later became and remains today a Buddhist temple. The name, Angkor Wat, is a modern derivative of the Cambodian “Nokor Wat” which translates as “City of Temple Grounds.” The site itself is huge and requires a good set of legs and walking shoes to explore. (plus a walking stick in many areas over the rough terrain.)
Many other smaller temples dot the landscape all over this area and actually for a few hundred years many of these temples were lost to the ‘jungle.’

News Flash – On January 15, 2015, the government of Cambodia granted official recognition to the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Cambodia. This recognition allows the 32 churches, 9 lay pastors, and 8 ordained pastors to form a constitution and conduct a founding convention.
