Our missionary “career” began in 1988 in Venezuela, where we served as missionaries for 13 years, planting churches and training church leaders. While there, our four children were born and grew up as “bi-cultural kids”. It was during those years that God opened our eyes and our hearts to the joys and challenges of serving the Lord as cross-cultural missionaries.
Later, Jim served as an Area Director for missions with the LCMS, and as a church planter in Miramar, Florida. Liisa taught music and Spanish in the Lutheran elementary schools in the Miami area from 2001 – 2014. In 2010, Jim founded Global Lutheran Outreach, an organization that identifies, recruits, and trains people to serve as cross-cultural missionaries.
In 2013, Jim accepted the invitation of the Lutheran Church of Chile to serve as a missionary to Santiago while still continuing as director of GLO. After raising support for 1 year, we “deployed” to Santiago in October 2014 with the goal of planting two or more churches in that city of over 7 million people. We first worked in a team with missionaries from Argentina on a church planting ministry that was already in progress. Once that congregation was established, we began planting the second Lutheran church in Santiago. In God’s wisdom, many of the members are Venezuelan immigrants who have fled the horrendous conditions in their home country. Some of them we even knew from our years in Venezuela! That congregation, “Divina Providencia” (Divine Providence) is a bustling ministry which also provides temporary lodging, orientation, and other assistance to immigrants. In November 2022, the congregation called a Venezuelan pastor to serve them and we repatriated to the USA so that Jim could assume the leadership of GLO full-time.
We are grateful to God for our those experiences. We believe the Lord is using them to equip us to provide vigorous and Jesus-focused leadership to a new generation of missionaries “from everywhere to everywhere”! At the same time, we venture out in faith, not knowing what lies ahead, but trusting that God will lead us and guide us.
Please Pray for:
